The Beaconsfield Twinning Association (BTA) was founded in 1995, and is twinned with Langres in North East France.
The BTA facilitates the exchange of young people in schools and in families, we encourage exchanges between clubs and organisations of all types, and we organise visits to Langres for various events, staying with families or in hotels, reciprocating by hosting Langres people in our homes and organising interesting activities during their visits.
For more information about Langres, visit the Langres page on this website or visit the Langres Facebook page for their latest local news, events, etc.
For information on how to join, please email our secretary on [email protected]
Did you know...
...that Butler's Court and houses in Grove Road were bought by the Free French Navy and used as a military hospital during the Second World War?
...that General de Gaulle and Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, came to visit the hospital in 1941?
...that the Free French forces who died in the hospital were buried in the Shepherds Lane cemetery here?
...that the memoral to them was created by Dick Smith, our Town Crier, and has recently been refurbished by the Twinning Association?
Would you like to read the whole story?
“The Free French: Beaconsfield and Africa” by Robin Pedler, has been reprinted by the Beaconsfield Twinning Association to commemorate the 70th anniversary year of the D-Day landings.
This charmingly written personal history of the whole episode, plus the story of how the author's father worked with the Free French in Africa, is illustrated by many photos and maps.
Robin Pedler became involved in Beaconsfield Twinning in the very early days and remained a great supporter until his death. The house he lived in, in Grove Road, is featured in the book, because it was bought by the Free French Navy to form part of the hospital, along with the Butler’s Court estate.
