Langres is situated in the Champagne Ardenne region of North East France. It is between four and five hours drive east of Calais on the A26 autoroute, and about 60km north of Dijon. The TGV train station is at Chaumont, about 15 minutes drive due north of Langres, which has direct trains to and from Paris daily.
Langres is an ancient fortress town dating back to before the Romans, but with a new town outside the ramparts. The population is about the same as Beaconsfield and the town has an industrial zone employing over 3,000 people.
Surrounding Langres are four beautiful lakes, a canal linking the Marne and Rhone rivers and lovely rolling countryside. With its many hotels, there is a wide choice of accommodation in both style and price within the ramparts and outside.
It is famous for its unique 'Langres' soft cheese (available in our local Tesco and Sainsbury) and for being the birthplace of the philosopher and writer Denis Diderot (1713).

La Maison des Lumières in Langres - the only museum in the world dedicated solely to Denis Diderot
The Hôtel de Breuil is one of the architectural masterpieces of the city of Langres. Built in 1580 and enlarged in 1770, it was for many years a private dwelling. In 1923 the Du Breuil de Saint-Germain family bequeathed it to the Historical and Archeological Society of Langres, who turned it into a museum devoted to the decorative arts and the memory of Denis Diderot, though the great author and philosopher who was born in Langres lived elsewhere in the town.
In 2009, the city of Langres gained ownership of the building, which was by then in disrepair, and after serious fundraising, opened the "Maison des Lumières" or "House of the Enlightenment" dedicated solely to Denis Diderot.

This wonderfully restored building is well worth a visit when you are next in Langres.
Members of the delegation from Beaconsfield who visited Langres for the Fête Nationale in July 2014 were treated to a guided tour of the museum. Special thanks go to Chantal Andriot for her expert multi-lingual commentary which was greatly appreciated.
